Connect Home Assistant to Noma, control your home with a simple request

Noma is a home AI agent with long-term memory. Home Assistant connects and manages compatible devices. Noma uses that connection to check device status and act on your requests, drawing on your preferences when memory is enabled.

This guide covers preparation through your first device control. Reading requires no account; connecting a home and using devices requires signing in.

Before you begin

  • A Noma account and a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer to open the setup wizard.
  • A device that can keep Docker and the Noma connector running, with access to Home Assistant and the internet.
  • A reachable Home Assistant instance. If you don’t have one, install it in the next section.
  • At least one working Home Assistant device to test status queries or control.

Reuse an existing Home Assistant OS, NAS, or other installation. It can run on a different device as long as the connector can reach it.

1. Install or reuse Home Assistant

If you can already open Home Assistant and control your devices, skip to the next section. Otherwise, follow the official Home Assistant installation guide and choose a method for your hardware.

Install and start Docker first

Complete these preparations to install Home Assistant with Docker. If Docker is already running, go straight to checking availability.

  1. Choose your operating system and follow the official installation guide: Windows、macOS、Linux. On Mac, choose the version matching your Apple or Intel chip.
  2. On Windows, complete WSL 2 and other requirements in the installation guide. Restart if prompted before continuing.
  3. On Windows and macOS, open Docker Desktop, wait for the engine to start, and keep it running. On Linux, start Docker and configure command permissions according to your distribution’s installation guide.
  4. Open PowerShell on Windows or Terminal on macOS/Linux, then run the check below.
docker info

Continue once both Client and Server information appear. If docker is not found, confirm installation and reopen the terminal. If the engine is unreachable, start Docker Desktop or the Docker service. Resolve permission errors using your operating system’s official instructions.

Then install Home Assistant with Docker

Once Docker is available, run this command in the same terminal. It matches the Noma setup wizard:

docker run -d --name homeassistant --restart unless-stopped -e TZ=Asia/Shanghai -p 8123:8123 -v homeassistant_config:/config ghcr.io/home-assistant/home-assistant:stable

This command saves your configuration in the Docker homeassistant_configvolume. Check existing instances first if the container name or port 8123 is already in use; avoid duplicate installation.

The first start downloads the image and initializes Home Assistant. When it’s ready, use the computer running Home Assistant to open http://localhost:8123 to create a home and local user. From another device, use the computer’s local IP, such ashttp://192.168.1.100:8123。

Add devices in Home Assistant under Settings → Devices & services and test manual control. Docker networking may affect discovery. Refer to each integration’s official documentation for connection and compatibility details.

2. Connect Noma

  1. Sign in to Noma and open Settings → Home Assistant, then click “I’ve installed Home Assistant.”
  2. Go to Set up connection. Copy the command generated for your account and run it on the Docker device.
  3. The default address is http://host.docker.internal:8123, used to reach Home Assistant on the host from the connector container. For an instance on a NAS or another device, or if this address is unreachable, expand Custom Home Assistant address, enter a reachable local HTTP address, regenerate the command, and run it.
  4. Return to Noma and select “I’ve run the command — check connection.” Once you see “Noma connected,” continue to authorization.

Connection commands are account-specific. Use the latest command from your own settings. Keep Home Assistant and the connector running. If the connector is not yet available, wait before continuing.

3. Create a long-lived access token and authorize

  1. Open your Home Assistant and go to Profile → Security → Long-lived access tokens.
  2. Click Create token, enter a recognizable name such as Noma, and copy the token.
  3. Return to Noma’s Authorize Home Assistant step and paste the token into the long-lived access token field.
  4. Click Verify and connect, and check the result shown on the page.

This token lets Noma access your Home Assistant. Enter it only in your own Noma settings, never in public screenshots or posts. Delete it in Home Assistant to revoke access. Learn more in the official Home Assistant authentication documentation。

4. Verify devices and start your first conversation

Once connected, go to the Noma Home page to check device names, rooms, and states. Then open Noma chat. Adapt these example requests to your device names:

  • Check status: “Is the living room light on or off?”
  • First control: “Turn on the living room light.”
  • Adjust AC: “Set the bedroom AC to cooling at 26 degrees.”

Review Noma’s tool results and actual device states. Temperature queries require a sensor; temperature adjustments require a capable AC entity. Available actions depend on device capabilities and authorization.

Then let Noma learn your preferences

With automatic memory enabled, tell Noma “I prefer my bedroom at 26 degrees when I sleep.” It can refer to that preference in future relevant conversations. Review or delete memories in settings. Saving a preference does not create a scheduled task or automatically run devices on a schedule.

Connection troubleshooting

Can’t open Home Assistant?
Confirm Home Assistant is running. For Docker installations, check Docker and the homeassistant container. localhost refers to your current device; from another computer or phone, use the Home Assistant device’s local network address and ensure port 8123 is reachable.
Noma says no connection detected?
Run the connection command generated in your account’s settings and keep Docker and the connector running. If Home Assistant is on another device, enter a reachable HTTP address such as http://192.168.1.100:8123 under Custom Home Assistant address, regenerate and run the command, then check again. On Linux, verify container access rather than assuming host.docker.internal works.
Token verification failed?
Confirm the connection works and the token is copied in full from the correct Home Assistant instance. If deleted or expired, create a new token and verify again in Noma.
Connected, but devices are missing or won’t respond?
Confirm devices are connected, online, and manually controllable in Home Assistant. Check names, rooms, and capabilities: a temperature sensor cannot adjust an AC. Refresh the Noma Home page, then make a request using a specific device name.
Can I set this up on a phone?
Setup currently requires a computer and a device that can run Docker. Once connected, sign in to the same account on your phone to use home features.
Can I try Noma without smart devices?
You can try Noma chat first. Device status and control require Home Assistant. Enable memory in settings to use long-term memory; saved memories can be viewed, managed, and deleted.
